DS using audio files for data transfer

Bangai-O Spirits

Now this is something I didn’t expect to see in this day and age. A decidedly low-tech form of file transfer has given the DS a functionality the developers never saw coming.

Bangai-O Spirits provides it’s users with a level editor to wring every last cent of playability out of their game. The interesting part is that it saves the levels as audio files, so rather than using the built in wifi to transfer data to friends, you just hold the speakers of your DS to your friends microphone, and the game records the sound file which contains all the data of the custom made level.

Sure, this isn’t mind blowing or anything, but the cool part comes in when users incorporate our favorite international video sharing service, YouTube. Users are recording their sound files, putting them on YouTube, and thusly able to share their levels with anyone who can access YouTube.

So using the dated technology of data in audio, they’re able to do more with their DS than you would be able to with a standard, wifi-share file system. You’ve got to love those inventive Japanese.

Here’s a sample video of the terrifying sound.
